"Love is All Around" is a song composed by Reg Presley and performed by The Troggs. Purportedly inspired by a television transmission of the Joy Strings Salvation Army band and based on Presley's infamous love of pancakes and Shrove Tuesday (a working title was supposedly 'Pancakes All Around'[citation needed]) the song was first released as single in the UK in October 1967, peaking at #5 in the charts. It went on to reach #7 on the Hot 100 in the US on 18 May 1968. This version features a string quartet and a 'tick tock' sound on percussion. The song was used in The Gap's popular "Denim Dreams" commercial. "Love is All Around" has been covered by numerous artists, including R.E.M., with whom the Troggs subsequently recorded their 1992 comeback album Athens Andover. Reg Presley (born Reginald Maurice Ball on 12 June 1941 in Andover, Hampshire) is an English singer/songwriter. He is best known as the lead singer with prominent 1960s rock and roll band The Troggs, whose biggest hit was "Wild Thing". His most famous composition is "Love Is All Around". When this song was covered by Wet Wet Wet in 1994 it stayed at #1 in the UK singles chart for fifteen weeks and Presley famously spent much of (sometimes it is claimed all of) the proceeds on crop circle research.
