The song was composed by pop singer Richard Marx, who would later record song himself for the Japanese release of his Days In Avalon album. The song is a ballad, with the lead vocals being sung by JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake. "This I Promise You" was the group's fifth top 10 single in the US, reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the autumn of 2000. In addition, the song spent 13 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, the group's first song to do so. The single was less successful internationally, reaching #21 on the UK Singles Chart and failing to make the top 20 in Australia.
