"Solitaire" is a popular song written by Neil Sedaka and Phil Cody. It tells of a man losing touch with, and thus losing, his sweetheart. Alone, he's "playing solitaire".
Solitaire has been recorded by Sedaka, The Carpenters (a #17 hit in 1975, it topped the Easy Listening survey), Andy Williams (a #4 hit in the United Kingdom in 1973), Jann Arden, Sheryl Crow, Clay Aiken, and Sissel, among others. The Carpenters were a vocal and instrumental duo, consisting of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter. Though often referred to by the public as "The Carpenters", the duo's official name on authorized recordings and press materials is simply "Carpenters", without the definite article. During a period in the 1970s when louder and wilder rock was in great demand, Richard and Karen produced a distinctively soft musical style that made them one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
