"I Could Write a Book" is a show tune from the 1940 Rodgers and Hart musical Pal Joey (1940), where it was introduced by Gene Kelly and Leila Ernst. Rodgers and Hart were an American songwriting partnership consisting of the composer Richard Rodgers (1902 1979) and the lyricist Lorenz Hart (1895 1943). They worked together on about thirty musicals from 1919 until Hart's death in 1943. Their breakthrough came in 1925 with The Garrick Gaieties, which featured the hit song "Manhattan."
