"I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" is a Grammy Award–winning song composed and written by Jim Steinman, and recorded by Meat Loaf. The song was released in 1993 as the first single from the album Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell. It reached number one in twenty-eight countries,[1] the first being Australia on September 4, 1993, where it stayed for 8 weeks, becoming the highest selling single of the year there. It also stayed at number one for seven weeks in the United Kingdom. The single was certified platinum in the United States and became Meat Loaf's first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and on the UK singles chart. The song also ranked at #44 on Blender's list of the "50 Worst Songs Ever".[2] It features a female vocalist who was credited only as "Mrs. Loud" in the album notes. James Richard "Jim" Steinman (born November 1, 1947 in New York City, New York) is an American record producer, composer and lyricist, responsible for several hit songs. He has also worked as an arranger, pianist, and singer. His work has included songs in the adult contemporary, rock and roll, dance, pop, musical theater, and film score genres. His work includes such albums as Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell and Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell, and producing albums for Bonnie Tyler. His most successful chart singles include Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart", Air Supply's "Making Love out of Nothing at All", Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (but I Won't Do That)", Barry Manilow's "Read 'Em and Weep", Celine Dion's cover of "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" (originally released by Steinman's project Pandora's Box), and Boyzone's "No Matter What". The album Bad for Good was released in his own name in 1981. Beginning his career in musical theater, Steinman's most notable work in the area includes lyrics for Whistle Down the Wind and music for Tanz der Vampire. "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" is a Grammy.
