About the Song
"Groovin'" is a single released in 1967 by The Young Rascals that became a number-one hit and one of the group's signature songs. Written by group members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati and with a lead vocal from Cavaliere, it is indeed a slow, relaxed groove, based on Cavaliere's newfound interest in Afro-Cuban music. Instrumentation included a conga, harmonica, and an effective, Cuban-based bass guitar line from ace session musician Chuck Rainey. The result was fairly different from the Rascals' white soul origins, enough so that Atlantic Records head Jerry Wexler did not want to release "Groovin'". Lyrically, "Groovin'" is themed around a highly romantic portrayal of a couple in love: Life would be ecstasy, you and me endlessly ... About the Artist
Felix Cavaliere (born November 29, 1942) is an American music producer and musician, having performed in The Young Rascals group during the 1960s. He later produced albums by a variety of artists, including Laura Nyro's 1970 opus Christmas and the Beads of Sweat, and Jimmie Spheeris' 1973 album The Original Tap Dancing Kid. Cavaliere had a solo hit in 1980, "Only A Lonely Heart Sees." (Billboard #36) In 1982, he and former Rascals bandmate Dino Danelli joined Steve Van Zandt in the group Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, on the group's Men Without Women album. Cavaliere was a touring member of Ringo Starr's third All-Starr Band, and performed with them on a 1995 tour. He inducted the band Vanilla Fudge into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. In 2008, he recorded an album with Steve Cropper (of the 1960's Stax house band) entitled "Nudge it Up a Notch." He continues to tour as "Felix Caviliere's Rascals." On June 18, 2009, Cavaliere (along with former writing partner Eddie Brigati) was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
