"Hikari" (? ?, lit. "light") is Hikaru Utada's 10th Japanese-language single (12th overall), and is also her 3rd single on the Deep River album. Its release date was March 20, 2002. It is the main theme song for the Japanese release of the Squaresoft (now Square Enix) and Disney Interactive video games Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Utada was the only singer Tetsuya Nomura, the director of Kingdom Hearts, had in mind for the Kingdom Hearts theme song. This also marked the first time Utada had produced a song for a video game. The English language version of the song, titled "Simple and Clean," was used in the English release of Kingdom Hearts. Although the two songs share a similar melody and background music, the meaning of the lyrics is significantly different. Kingdom Hearts (???????? ,Kingudamu Hatsu?) is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Co. (now Square Enix) in 2002 for the PlayStation 2 video game console. The first game in the Kingdom Hearts series, it is the result of a collaboration between Square and The Walt Disney Company. The game combines characters and settings from Disney's animated features with those from Square's Final Fantasy series. The story follows a young hero, Sora, as he is thrown into an epic battle against the forces of Heartless. He is joined by Donald Duck and Goofy, classic Disney characters, who help him on his quest. Kingdom Hearts was a departure from Square's standard role-playing games by introducing a substantial action-adventure element to the gameplay.
