Al Kasha (born 22 January 1937) is a Brooklyn–born composer, songwriter and arranger, as well as businessman. He is most noted for his years of collaboration with songwriter Joel Hirschhorn.
The songwriting duo won two Oscars for Best Song, "The Morning After" from The Poseidon Adventure in 1972 and "We May Never Love Like This Again" from The Towering Inferno in 1974.
Along with Hirshhorn, Kasha also received two Tony nominations for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Copperfield, two Grammy nominations and an Emmy, as well as four Golden Globe nominations and a People's Choice award. They also composed the theme song to the short-lived 1990s game show The Challengers. "Candle on the Water" is a song from Walt Disney Picture's live action/animation film Pete's Dragon. It is sung by Helen Reddy, who plays Nora in the film, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song. The setting for the song is entirely on the lantern room balcony of the lighthouse in which Nora and her father, Lampey, live. Nora sings the song to her lover Paul, who has been lost at sea for over a year and Nora deludes herself by believing he will one day return..
