On June 9, 2009, Carey announced via Twitter that the first single from Memoirs would be "Obsessed" and that it would be released to radio the following Tuesday, June 16; she also stated that "this is one of [her] favorite songs ever." The singer described the song as an "uptempo fun summer record". Carey said that even though she wanted to release a ballad, "Obsessed" had to come out first because she wanted "a fun summer moment to kick off the album".
